A New Approach: The Mosquito-Repellant Patch
The TPI mosquito and insect-repellant patches represent a new technology in the battle against insect-borne diseases. They utilize the medically proven transdermal route of administration which assures greater user compliance and provides continuous 36 hour protection.
Their insect avoidant action employs an effective "cloaking" technology that is in some ways similar to the effect produced by the topically-applied DEET-based insect-avoidants. However, the patches offer a significantly longer (36 hour) efficacy period, their active agent exhibits no toxicity or undesirable side effects and they can be used safely by even the youngest children.
In addition, their application is simple and–most importantly–their effectiveness is not diminished by perspiration, rain, bathing or rub-off.
This permits the patches to offer the full-time "go anywhere, do anything" protection that is required to protect African children and adults against the deadly bite of the anopheles and aedes mosquitoes.
The Protective Action of The Patches
The TPI patches protect against the anopheles mosquito and other biting insects by delivering sustained doses of B-1 thiamin into the system over an extended period.
Although the nutritional value of vitamin B-1 thiamin is common knowledge, what makes it a surprisingly effective mosquito-avoidant is its ability to "mask" the smell of carbon dioxide expelled through breath and perspiration and which are the primary attractants for mosquitoes.
It is well established that mosquitoes are drawn to their subjects by olfactory cues (smell) and can detect their "prey" from as far away as 36 meters. The ability to "mask" the giveaway smell of carbon dioxide by substituting an odor generated by B-1 thiamin is analogous to military "stealth" technology: making the person "invisible" to the mosquito's "radar".
It is a simple action but a highly effective one.
The action of the B-1 patches is easy to understand. When the system receives quantities of B-1 beyond its basic nutritional needs, excess B-1 is excreted through the sweat glands. The excreted B-1 has the property of masking the smell of carbon dioxide naturally expelled by breath and perspiration and replacing it with its own smell (which is repugnant to insects).
